Super World Indie Tune Of The Day 03.04.2020: Gary Olson – “Giovanna Please”.
I don’t say this lightly but the moody aural landscape of “Giovanna Please” put me immediately in mind of Wichita Lineman. Yep, it’s that good. It’s got that beautiful seventies pop sound – the strings and guitar marry to delightful effect, the gorgeous melody is both wistful and dreamlike. The song sound likes an instant classic and fills me with anticipation for the forthcoming LP.
Gary is a vocalist/trumpeter with The Ladybug Transistor. His new self-titled LP will be released on Tapete Records on the 29th of May. This is the second collaboration featuring Ole Johannes Åleskjær we have posted this week! Over a period of eight years, Gary would visit Ole and brother Jorn’s barn studio in rural Norway and do basic tracks on whatever songs the three had written. He would then take the recordings back to Brooklyn where he would add vocals, horns and strings at his studio. The recordings would then return to Norway for producer Ole to finish the tracks. By the end of 2019 the LP was complete.
With Ole producing and playing guitar and Gary doing vocals and trumpet the album personnel was rounded out by Håvard Krogedal – bass, cello; Emil Nikolaisen drums (both from Serena-Maneesh ); Joe McGinty (The Psychedelic Furs) string arrangements, piano and organ and Suzanne Nienaber (Pale Lights) backing vocals.
Love the album cover too, it really captures the mood of the music. Gary was asked how he’d like the album to be listened to. He reply was “I’d suggest listening in a moving train facing the window. Close your eyes and feel the sunlight pass between the trees. Open your eyes slowly and realize you’ve missed your stop, repeat. “ Hopefully we can all get back on the train soon!
