Don’t Look Now, The Wicker Man, Turn Of The Screw, just some of the movies evoked by “Shake! Witches are back”, the second song we have featured by Bess Of Bedlam. Dreams, nightmares, nursery rhymes, a creeping sense of unease…a cry of defiance, wrapped in a distinctly English folk idiom and eventually a throaty chuckle. Sends shivers down the spine, doesn’t it? “Shake! Witches are back” is originally a rallying cry of the Italian women’s liberation movement of the 1970’s – “Tremate ! Le streghe son tornate”. I’m shaking, I love witches. The song is from Bess’s excellent LP “Folly Tales” out now on Outré Disque.
