Bird Of The Year – Elevator. Super World Indie Tune Of The Day – 19.10.2018
I am a sucker for sweet, guitar indie pop. The kind of songs that sound throwaway, you know they don’t really matter, you know pop songs don’t really matter. At the same time you know they’re one of the most important things in the world.”Elevator” is just such a song. Languid, shimmering guitars combine with world-weary vocals to produce bright, shadowy, disposable music that you will want to keep forever. Coming on like a melange of House Of Love, Go-Betweens and Blur, it’s song as an artefact of beauty.
Elevator was released as a single in 2017 as if from their split LP with Raccoon Rally (Numavi Records).
The video is filmed in an installation by the Graz artist Maria Schneider at Atelier im Schwimmbad Wies. The installation stands for the intricate world of thought and for the people who paint their world with the drab monotony of tv. daydreaming etc, even though they could wander through a colourful world of thought with dancing, adventures and monkeys. Or spend afternoons with cameras in abandoned swimming pools. I can see that. I also think a lot of the boxes look like coffins, which suggests that drab monotony is like a living death. Death, death, DEATH, DARKNESS.HELL, AAARRRGHHHHH [time for your medication. Ed.]
