Greetings from a very sunny Dublin! Here's our second SWIT Sounds Abound of 2018, a round-up of the best songs from our myriad subscriptions. 10 great tunes for all you loons. Everything added to our Best of 2018 lists as well. Scorchio.
New Silver Girl – Phantom Ride (Soliti)
Here is Helsinki’s New Silver Girl’s debut for Soliti. They describe ‘Phantom Ride’ as ‘psychedelic garage pop with a hypnotic pulse’. The song was recorded at Berlin’s legendary Hansa Studios, and I’m sure it gives it that little bit of extra magic. Class tune.
Erio – The Biggest of Hearts (La Tempesta)
Photo, make-up and editing: Eros Carpita
Disconcerting, to say the least, this tale of loss is laced with distorted voices, overlapping twisted and broken beats and it will haunt you long after it’s stopped playing. Clever stuff from Rome’s Erio, off LP “Inesse”.
Steve Pepe – Baionetta (Hivern Discs)
Simply brilliant electronic music from Italy’s Steve Pepe, LP “Danza Moderna” out in June.
The Essex Green “The 710” (Merge Records)
“The 710” by The Essex Green is a wonderful sepia-toned pop miracle. It’s from the album Hardly Electronic, out June 29, and their first LP in 12 years I believe. Worth the wait!
Blacanova – El Angel Exterminador (El Genio Equivocado)
SWIT favourites Blacanova gives us a typical love story of two people who do not know how to turn a page. Oh, and one of them happens to be a vampire. Sweet sounds, super video. Orange you glad we brought you this music from Seville?
The Pirouettes – Baisers volés (Kidderminster)
SWIT regulars (they have their own seat at the bar) The Pirouettes give us “Baisers volés”, the 2nd single from their new album to be released this autumn. This is French pop perfection and has a keyboard riff to die for.
Ljubliana & the Seawolf – Vacuum (bankrobberbcn)
Ljubliana and the Seawolf is a 6 piece band from Barcelona that produces highly original and wonderfully weird music. This is the first cut from new EP “Shit Dope”, out June 2018, did anyone mention a womb with a view?
Dirtmusic – Outrage (feat. Görkem Şen) (Glitterbeat)
“Outrage” is from Dirtmusic’s fifth album, a full-scale collaboration with Turkish-psych visionary Murat Ertel from Baba Zula. Well worth reading the narrative of the band and this collaboration under the video on YouTube. Angry, open and confrontational – this is great music.
Núria Graham – Bird hits its head against the wall (El Segell del Primavera)
Super new live video from Núria Graham, it’s got everything we’ve come to expect, sharp lyrics, smokey, laid-back delivery and a great band that make it all look deceptively easy. From 2017’s “Does It Ring a Bell”.
Wrong Body – Always There (Cut Surface)
This is just superb. Mournful, sweet and echoing, pulsing electronics and majestic vocals. Might be the pick of the bunch, Cut Surface is releasing some fabulous music at the moment. Wrong Body is the new project of Dino Spiluttini. Currently, he’s living in Vienna, working as musician, producer & visual artist.
