David Harks – ‘Avalon’

We’ve covered David Hark’s work with both Satin Jackets and Safetalk on a number of occasions here at SWIT Towers and now David has been launched into space on his first solo mission. As you may expect, Avalon is a chilled, electronic meditation on the journey home. It’s got it all, spirituality, yearning, love and the kind of positive vibes we’ve come to know him for. David’s sidekick is Pete Cattermoul (Teleman) and it’s released on new French label Splinter.

Avalon, literally meaning “the isle of fruit (or apple) trees” is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend. It first appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s 1136 pseudo-historical account Historia Regum Britanniae (“The History of the Kings of Britain”) as the place where King Arthur’s sword Excalibur was forged and later where Arthur was taken to recover from his wounds after the Battle of Camlann. Avalon was associated from an early date with mystical practices and people such as Morgan le Fay.

Is David searching for the utopia of a lost kingdom, to re-enter the garden of paradise, to regain lost innocence? Well, he does say “Avalon came to me in a dream – One minute I felt like a sponge in space bundled in warmth, the next I leaned out of the spaceship and saw it all hurtling toward me on earth… Materialism, possession, an unstoppable wheel both ridged and exhausting… I wanted to counter this dream and turn back, head up out again and leave it all behind… And return to my spiritual home.’ I’ll take that a yes.

Word to the wise David, try a trip to the west coast of Ireland and sort your head out man 🙂
