Super World Interview Time: MimiCof

Kyoto-born, Berlin-based MimiCof, who’s also been releasing music under her name Midori Hirano since 2006, has a new album – “Moon Synch” – out on Alien Transistor and it takes her in a different direction (see below). We absolutely love the record and we were delighted when she did this interview for us in May. It’s taken us a little longer than anticipated to publish but here it is, well worth the wait!

Why did you decide to be a Musician?

I had been taking a piano lesson since I was a small kid, then I ended up to be an electronic musician in order to escape from practicing a piano everyday but also to find a new way to build up my own musical world.

What was the first piece of music you loved, and why?

Probably “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M“ by Simon & Garfunkel since my mother liked to play songs of them while she was cooking etc. Then again when I was a teenager I finally got to learn it’s song title because it was used in a Japanese TV drama series.

What is your favourite song that you’ve written and why?

It always changes depending on my mood. But if I have to choose the one at the moment, then maybe “Rising“ from my “Moon Synch” record because this is the first track I made for this record and it gave me the first idea of what kind of album I want to make.

What made you to use an Analogue Synthesizer on Moon Synch? 

I was eager to find an instrument I could just play and improvise other than a piano, since I had been bored of composing with a computer after many years of doing that. Then I luckily got a chance to do a residency at EMS elektronmusikstudion in Stockholm for a week in 2015 to try the Buchla synthesizer – and during my residency I kept recording further with it just by improvising.

Had you any preconceived ideas what kind of record you wanted to make or did the sounds just guide you when you started?

I had no preconceived ideas about what kind of album to make when I started recordings, but after I brought the bunch of sound files I made at EMS back to home and started working on them, I slowly got some images by putting sound layers on what I recorded.

How do you know when a song you’ve working on is complete?

By hearing the track again and again, and take some breaks from it, then back to hearing it again – after doing this whole cycles for many times, then I eventually can meet a conclusion to be sure that there’s nothing more left that must to be reduced – otherwise I tend to put too much layers in one track.

 What song by another artist do you wish you had written and why?

I’m often amazed by music from different kinds of artists, but I never wished I had written them by myself. But since I never did a “band“really, I sometimes wish that I could play in a band.

What artist(s) has been your biggest influence and in what way?

Too many to choose the one or two.

Name a song that makes you happy and why does it have that effect?

Maybe it’s not a happy song at all but I can somehow keep listening to “The Fragile“ of the Nine Inch Nails all day long 🙂

What is the best new band/artist that you’ve heard recently?

 Sleepland whom I saw in Kobe recently played very beautiful set with guitar loops and effects.

What’s your idea of success?

 Being happy and love what you have.

I’m not good on drawing, so I send you a photo I took in a beautiful garden of the temple where I played live in Tokyo during my tour in Japan last time. The stone you can see in the picture shows “Number 50“ with a flower symbol which I find nice.
