“It’s a Wonderful Life” with David Jikia of Bedford Falls

Could you tell us a bit about yourselves? How long you’ve been together, members of the band, How many releases you have…..I must admit I’ve only just discovered your music via your YouTube Channel

First of all. You can only discover our music on YouTube because we don’t have a label, we don’t work in a professional and prestigious studio. We just get it done at home. With a cheap microphone and pirated version of a recording software. We’ve been together I’d say about two years or so. There’s four of us in the band. Our names are quiet hard to pronounce, I’ll advise you not try or you’ll break your tongue. First there’s me. That’s David Jikia – on the vocals and rhythm guitar. Mikho Kalandarishvili on lead guitar. George Migriauli on bass and Sandro Diasamidze on drums. Please don’t make fun of our foreign surnames 🙂

Do you think non-US/UK groups get enough exposure in the major British and American magazines? Does it matter to you?

Of course bands that come from elsewhere don’t get enough attention. I mean, why would they? We’re far from British or American standards of recording or songwriting. I mean, we try our best. And most of times, in our not very humble opinion we succeed to create something of that level. And it means everything for us to break out of our own region and expand our fan base to Europe and the US.

What was the first piece of music you loved, and why?

I’d  say The Beatles were my first love. And I’m still devoted to them. They taught everything there is to know about creating music. Everyone who’s ever picked up a guitar or started a band owes a great deal of gratitude them.

What is your favourite song that you’ve written and why?

That would be Dreamer Once just because of its simplicity. It was written only a few months back. I was really into trip-hop at that point. Couldn’t really appreciate that kind of style but I wanted to create something like that. And that’s how it came to be.

How do you know when a song you’ve working on is complete?

You’ll know when the song’s completed by the feel of it. I can’t really explain it. That’s beyond me. It just feels complete. And when you record it you try a lot things with it. You put more and more instrumentation, try different effects but mostly it stays the same. So I try to write my best using just a piano or an acoustic guitar otherwise I’d be relying on sound effects and boring beats.

Do your songs change much when played in front of a live audience?

Most of them do. Fortunately it’s for the better. They get more energetic or inventive on live shows. For songs that need an extra instrument we use a pre-recorded tape on the laptop. Sort of how Twenty One Pilots do it.

What song by another artist do you wish you had written and why?

God Only Knows by The Beach Boys. What I can say, it’s one of the greatest. Brian Wilson is a genius. This song is pure, tender melodic masterpiece which serves as an ode to love. How he managed to write and then arrange it is beyond me. Whenever I listen to it I realize that the artist is much ahead of me. It’s song I wish to have written, but also a song I could never write. For lack of talent or other reasons. Also I’d love to have written The Suburbs by Arcade Fire. A song in which they managed to capture the unbearable frustration of being young. Such a memorable chord progression and such tender vocals.

What artist(s) has been your biggest influence and in what way?

I’d say The Beatles first and foremost. For the reasons I’ve mentioned above. Radiohead hit me hard when I first listened to it. Their songs are like classical compositions. And the arrangement is almost impossible to recreate. You try playing House of Cards or Motion Picture Soundtrack in a four man band and you’ll get nowhere near the sound they’ve created. They manage to compose such dark and beautifully sad songs which sometimes are pretty hard to comprehend at first, but you dig them, you can never let go. Arcade Fire also introduced us to the sound we’d like to achieve. There’s no way of explaining why we love them, it’s just for the reason that they are really, really, really good.

Name a song that makes you happy and why does it have that effect?

This Must Be The Place by – Talking Heads. This song just has that sort of sound that puts a smile on your face. Both lyrics and the melody express such a joyful atmosphere that you can’t resist another listen.

What is the best new band that you’ve heard recently?

We’re not that qualified in the new stream of music. We do love Vampire Weekend though. Their songs are simply playful and darkly deep at the same time.

What do you think of music streaming sites like Spotify and Deezer?

Personally not a devoted user of any of them. Although it’s a great way to get your music out there. And you never know, maybe you’ll get recognized or picked up by a huge label or something. Who knows.

What do you think of Bob Dylan winning The Nobel?

I love when my favourite artists get acknowledged by such prestigious accolades. He has been one my all-time greatest influences. Not only that people used laugh at me when I’d say Dylan’s my favourite poet. Who’s laughing now? He deserves it for creating such surreal and beautiful lyrics and reviving American folk tradition for generations to come.

Have you any gigs upcoming?

Mostly our gigs consist of small pubs and youthful clubs. We’d love to expand ourselves to eastern Europe and hopefully even further. But at the time we’re stuck here. But it’s alright really. Our fan base is getting larger day by day. People seem to enjoy or songs. Thanks again for noticing us.

David also did this fantastic drawing for our gallery, he’s a man of many talents!
