Interview with Orlando from Acid Waves

From Merida,Mexico we featured Acid Waves‘ latest EP Acapulco Love (Lado B) back in the summer. We caught up with main man Orlando to find out more. Laugh? Yes you will.

How does the dynamic work between you when songwriting? Do you always agree on musical direction?

Well, Acid Waves is my solo project, I wrote everything from scratch, so there’s no dynamic work between us when songwriting, but we have a similar taste on music, and we have made some tunes before. I think the only thing I know for sure is that we are two fucked up guys hahahahahaha We love to spend time with each other, gettin’ drunk, havin’ fun, listening music, btw my name’s Orlando.

Do you think Mexican groups get enough exposure in the major British and American magazines? Does it matter to you?

Mmm, this is a question that I can’t answer like somethin’ written on a stone, but I think that the Mexican groups that may have this ‘’enough exposure’’ are the ones signed by a really big label, cos’ Mexican ‘’indie’’ bands have lots of struggle gettin’ their music out. Yes, it matter for us, I mean, I want to be the cover of EVERY MAGAZINE IN THE WORLD hahahahahahahhaha I mean, I want my music to be played every were, be heard by everyone who passes by, I think that that’s every musician’s goal, and to get money to eat sometime hahahaha (gettin’ laid is another but you don’t need to be a musician to so that haha).

What was the first piece of music you loved, and why?

The song that literally changed my life was Echoes by Pink Floyd, and not just Echoes, it was the entire Live at Pompeii movie that changed the way that I listen, create and appreciate music. Of course at the time I had listen other PF albums and music from lots of genres, but that just came to turn my music world around haha.

What is your favourite song that you’ve written and why?

There’s two, sorry I can’t say only one hahaha the first song is called: My Little Boy. It was the first song that I ever finished. It has a really bad sound actually, but I wrote it cos’ my dad die 11 years ago, when I was 9 years old, that was something that always was on my mind, so when I wrote this and finished I felt like a happy person again, like finishin’ a chapter of my life. AND that first song made me start Acid Waves hahaha like if it was some therapy thing. My Acid Waves’ favourite song it’s Savages, it’s such an explicit song, every word of it it’s the Goddam truth.

How do you know when a song you’ve working on is complete?

I think I never know that, but when I can’t imagine something else, when there’s nothing to add, I think that there’s when I feel like it’s done.

Do your songs change much when played in front of a live audience?

Not much, I always love the bands that sound so tight and true to the record live, cos’ I think ‘’They really know their shit” So, I love to arrange the songs in a way that I can do something pretty close live, but the beers make it difficult hahahhahaha.

What song by another artist do you wish you had written and why?

How Deep Is Your Love by Bee Gees hahaha it’s the fuckin’ best song ever!

What artist(s) has been your biggest influence and in what way?

Michael Jackson, Roger Waters, Freddy Mercury, those are big names, but because of them I have a more complete sense of what I want to be: an entertainer, they care so much about the show, that people have an experience, and that’s my goal, that people come to see Acid Waves not just for the music.

Name a song that makes you happy and why does it have that effect?

Lose Yourself To Dance by Daft Punk, maybe it doesn’t makes me ‘’happy’’ but I love the way it sounds and the rhythm, so funky, I just love that song.

What is the best new band that you’ve heard recently?

It’s not like ‘’new’’ one of the newest band on my playlist are Borns, I just can’t stop listenin’.

What do you think of music streaming sites like Spotify and Deezer?

I think that they are tools to make your music go out, the cool thing about them is that you can make somethin’ worldwide with just a click. I mean because of them you find us and there’s an ocean between us hahahaha.

What’s the opposite of music?

‘’Livin-ness’’???? I don’t think that music has an opposite thing, but you can see how is the life of someone who loves music, it’s like a pure, happy and warm existence, but the people who don’t care at all it’s like something is missin’ inside them.

I’m Orlando, I’m Acid Waves songwriter and groupie, we hope to see you soon.:D
