Interfew with: Sofia Bolt

Sofia Bolt first came to our attention via Orouni and Clémentine March – Water Babies and we’re glad she did 🙂 Between fire and water, the young Franco-American musician Amélie Rousseaux, found a stage name that reflects her duality: Sofia Bolt, or the alliance of lightning (Bolt) and wisdom (Sofia, derived from the Greek Sophia), or the association of electricity and the antique know thyself and you will know. She herself, oscillating between the new world, New York, where her mother, a former opera singer, lives and the old continent, Europe, France where she created a new family of musicians. This former choirgirl was guided towards rock n’ roll and song writing by a father crazy about the Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Television, and by a helpful uncle who gave her her first electric guitar when she was thirteen. Axe in hand, the young woman became a traveller, anticipating the musician’s nomadic lifestyle, studying (political science and theater) and living  between Paris, Montreal, London, Hong-Kong and Amsterdam, as if already on tour, stateless or in transition, because no city is perfect, and perhaps I am made to live in the middle of the Atlantic ocean , as she suggests with humour. Find out more here. We caught up with Amélie a little while back and she kindly answered some questions for us.

What was the first tune you loved and why?

I remember discovering “Cannonball” by The Breeders when I was about 6 and absolutely loving the energy.

What is your favorite song/piece of music that you’ve written and why?

A new song called 10:15 that we’ll be recording soon. It makes me feel like I’m a carefree teenager hanging out in L.A.

What song by another artist do you wish you had written and why?

Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms”, both a spiritual and musical masterpiece.

What artist(s) has been your biggest influence and in what way?

David Bowie, to create whatever makes me feel an intense emotion no matter what.

Name a song that makes you happy and why does it have that effect?

“Start Me Up” by The Stones, it’s so groovy. Also love the music video, they’re funny guys.

What is the best new band that you’ve heard recently?

Younghusband from London.

Your band/artist name- how did you come up with it and what does it mean to you?

I’ve been obsessed with lightning bolts since I discovered the Aladdin Sane cover when I was a teen. I got a tattoo of the lightning bolt when I was 17 and it remains an important symbol of strength for me today. For the Sofia part – it’s a secret.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral?

Start Me Up 🙂

What question would you like to be asked that you never are? (and what would be your answer?)

Your motto?

Life is short. Call now.

Sofia Bolt play live at Les Trois Baudets on the 24th of May, 2016.
