Interfew with: Gin Ga

Gin Ga have featured on FEW on a number of occasions. Hailing from Vienna, the band, consisting of  members Alex Konrad, Emanuel Donner, Klemens Wihlidal and Matias Meno*, are masters of classic, beat-driven pop tunes. Sophisticated in their simplicity, they have just released another excellent single – 1ON1, accompanied by another of the quirky, humourous videos that have become their trademark. We caught up with them to find out a little more about their music and influences.

What was the first tune you loved, and why?

“We Will Rock You“ by Queen.

What is your favourite song/piece of music that you’ve written and why?

For me: the simpler it is, the better – remembering whatever I felt good about, and our new single 1ON1, because they have only a few ingredients…raaaww!

How do you know when a tune you’ve written is complete?

When it’s 1 week past deadline 🙂

What song by another artist do you wish you had written and why?

“Working Class Hero” by John Lennon because it’s basically just one chord, but even more “Under Pressure”.

What artist(s) has been your biggest influence and in what way?

I guess the most important are the ones I literally can’t listen to anymore unfortunately – Radiohead, Tom Waits and Queen. (Duly NOT included on playlist).

Name a song that makes you happy and why does it have that effect?

Track sketches make me happy, when they are not finished yet and everything is still possible…

What is the best new band that you’ve heard recently?

Last week I just rediscovered UFFIEs Debut from 2010. Plus a good song from Vienna’s We Walk Walls: “I Am Your Daughter“.

What’s your favourite radio station?

Ö1 (AT) and BBC 4 (UK).

Who would win a fight between a drummer and a bass player, and why?

I guess the bass player can fling the bass onto the drummer before he/she can get out of behind the set, but Matias (our drummer) just says, he’d pin down his opponents with his sticks before no time, so…

Your band/artist name- how did you come up with it and what does it mean to you?

It’s a fantasy word from an old Slovakian folk song  – “Islo dievca vodu“. But then we found it meant “Milky Way“ in Japanese, so we stick with it.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral?

I really don’t know, I’ll decide spontaneously.

*Matias Meno has a really good solo single out at the moment called “Flashlights” – and it’s included here on the playlists.
